Plein Air Painting Workshop

Fields, woods, rocky trails and distant ocean views are ours for the day. Explore painting the landscape from life in a most beautiful place! Painting the landscape from life inspires us to use shapes of color and simplify details.

In this one day workshop led by plein air painter and arts educator, Amy Bartlett Wright, we begin with a short lecture on methods of simplifying complex scenery and creating depth of field on a flat surface. Amy will demonstrate her methods of painting in oil and also in watercolor. She will point out what is important to look for, how to start and what to prioritize while painting from life. Students work on their own with guidance from Amy. We close with a gathering and show of works with constructive feedback.

Level: intermediate. Some painting experience advised. Participants must provide their own art supplies and lunch. Rain or shine.

About the Instructor 

Amy has worked for forty years as a fine artist, illustrator and muralist. She frequently paints the landscape plein air for the lessons it offers. Many of her murals and larger paintings began as plein air paintings such as we will do together in this workshop. She earned her BA at University of Maryland and Certificates in Illustration and in Painting at Rhode Island School of Design.
