December Owl Prowl

It’s the time of year to listen for native owl species at Norman Bird Sanctuary!  Learn how to identify owl species by sight and call before heading out on the trails.  You’ll listen for wild owls who are busy defending their nesting territories.  After a short hike, return indoors for hot chocolate, and meet our Animal Ambassador Barred Owl up close!

Fort & Shelter Building

Join Norman Bird Sanctuary for an exploration of the great outdoors in the crisp air. Participants will learn how to build shelters and forts in the yew forest (named the fairy forest by our summer campers) and explore along the way. We’ll also use our senses to discover the exciting changes that happen in early winter at NBS!

Winter Rarities Ecotour

Hop into the NBS van for a day trip that hits several birding hot spots throughout the region.  Coastal New England is known for a large number of rare birds visiting in the winter months.  Your birding guides plan the trip around current sightings reports, so you have the best chance of spotting rare winter migrants.  This program is designed for all birding skill levels and includes some low-impact walking.  Pack a bag lunch to go with provided snacks and water.  Dress warmly with appropriate footwear. Binoculars are recommended. Space is limited!

January Owl Prowl

Join the last owl prowl of the winter season! You’ll learn how to identify owl species by sight and call before prowling the trails after dark in search of owls who are defending their nesting territories. After our night hike, return indoors for hot chocolate and a chance to meet our captive Barred Owl Micah up close.

Advanced Winter Hiking

Are you looking for an active outdoor challenge?  Hike Norman Bird Sanctuary’s snowy ridge trails and take in the panoramic scenery from the top.  Turn your winter hibernation into a sense of accomplishment with this challenging naturalist-guided hike.  Afterwards, return inside for hot chocolate and tea—participants are encouraged to bring lunch.  Dress warmly.  Snowshoes are welcome but not necessary.

Family Nature Night: Meet the Animals

If your family loves animals, stop in for this hands-on experience at Norman Bird Sanctuary!  Meet animal ambassadors up close, and learn what makes reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds unique. Don’t forget your wildlife questions—we will discuss local species and what you can do to help protect our scaly, slimy, furry and feathered friends.
