Pre-K Spring Story & Stroll

Parents and preschoolers! Join NBS educators for a fresh spring series of nature stories that will inspire your favorite youngster to explore in nature. After the story, take your preschooler by the hand for a nature walk focused on the sights, sounds, and smells around the garden and trails. This program is rain or shine; in the event of inclement weather, an animal presentation will be substituted for the walk.

Spring Migration Ecotour

May is an exciting time to see droves of migrating warblers, raptors, shorebirds, and other species. Hop into the ‘Bird Van’ and hit the best birding hot spots throughout southern New England. Your birding guides plan the day trip around current sightings reports, so you have the best chance of spotting rare spring migrants. Pack a bag lunch to go with provided snacks and water refills.  Dress warmly with appropriate footwear, binoculars and a reusable water bottle are recommended. Sign up now, space is limited!

Spring Plant Walk

This family-friendly walk is a great way to celebrate spring! Join your naturalist guide on a botanical search for blooming flowers and other plants waking up from winter along the trails. You will learn about basic plant identification techniques, common native and invasive plants of Rhode Island and even look for wild edibles.

Recommended for ages 6 and up

The Story of Hanging Rock

Have you ever wondered how Hanging Rock came to be?  Join Education Director Rachel Holbert for an evening walking lecture out on the beautiful ridge trails to learn about the geology of the region.  Find out what Narragansett Bay and our stone walls have in common, as well as why Red Fox ridge isn’t made of puddingstone.  This intermediate difficulty hike will be about 2 miles across traverse rocky terrain.

Recommended for ages 8 and up
