“Ready, Set, Hike!” Teen Hiking Program

Calling all high schoolers interested in hiking at Norman Bird Sanctuary!  Take to the trails with the NBS Education staff to learn naturalist skills and help collect data on the property’s animal and plant diversity. The goal? Hike as many of the trails, see as much of the wildlife as possible, and have fun doing it! Participants will earn a $100 stipend, receive a free water bottle, and become First Aid/CPR certified.

All participants must commit to:

  • Attending all required hike dates, Sundays from 2:00-4:00pm (1 absence permitted)
    • September 24th @ 2PM
    • October 8th @ 2PM
    • October 22nd @ 2PM
    • November 5th @ 2PM
    • November 19th @ 2PM
    • First Aid (optional): TBD
  • Completing a post program evaluation

Teen Green Trail Journal Program

The Norman Bird Sanctuary is excited to announce the next round of our Teen Green program for students in grades 6-12. This engaging program offers teens the opportunity to hike our trails for free, track their progress in a trail journal and turn the journal in for fun prizes.

  • This program runs annually from January-December
  • Complete 6 trail rubbings you automatically win: Water bottle, Compass,  and Backpack
  • Complete all 10 trail rubbings to receive a FREE Household Membership and be entered to win $250!

EcoExplorer Program

Children of all ages are invited to become Norman Bird Sanctuary EcoExplorers by stopping by the Welcome Center, picking up their activity book, exploring NBS, filling out the eleven activities in the book, and taking the EcoExplorer pledge to explore and protect NBS and other natural areas!

No registration required. Just pick up your packet in the Welcome Center.


The Youth Hiking programs are “Powered by Prince,” through a grant from the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund at Newport Hospital.
